A sworn (or certified) translation is an official translation with legal value, required when a translated document must be submitted to public institutions, consulates, universities, or courts.
The sworn translator certifies the accuracy of the translation in front of a public official by signing a statement (called verbale di asseverazione) attesting its faithfulness to the original text.
Sworn translations are typically required for:
- Birth, marriage, or residency certificates
- Diplomas and academic qualifications
- Legal or notarial deeds
- Company records or business documents
- Documents for residence permits or citizenship applications
